How TutorIT Works

Authors create a representation of the knowledge to be acquired. TutorIT takes such representations as input and uses patented methods to make ALL tutoring decisions automatically. TutorIT works with any given student until that student demonstrates the author’s predetermined level of mastery

Depending on the knowledge representation received, TutorIT makes its decisions problem by problem and/or step by step, decision by decision. Authors need not tell TutorIT what to do or when to do it.

Authors simply create lists of the problems or tasks he or she wants students to learn to solve. Our more sophisticated authoring systems enable authors to create to create hierarchical representations of the knowledge to be acquired. To be-learned knowledge is represented simultaneously at all levels of expertise -- from beginner through intermediate to expert. Each and every step and decision to be mastered is detailed at all levels of expertise.

TutorIT takes knowledge representations and selected problems as input. Authors need not specify what to teach, how much to teach or when. TutorIT uses patented processes to make ALL pedagogical decisions automatically. Completing a given tutorial necessarily ensures that each student on completion achieves the level of mastery required by the author. Research demonstrates 50% reductions and more in authoring time and effort.

Given any knowledge representation, TutorIT can be set to deliver content in any number of ways – without any additional work. By default, TutorIT ensures that every student masters the given content on completion. The same knowledge representation can be delivered as a highly efficient diagnostic instrument. TutorIT also can be used as a performance aid providing step by step, decision by decision guidance, or to simply test mastery.

As learning progresses, TutorIT probes to find out what has already been learned, and what still needs to be learned. It delivers the information needed to progress when and as needed. When learning a complex skill, needy students start with the individual operations and decisions required to get the correct answer. Learning progresses step by step, decision by decision until the student demonstrates a predetermined level of mastery.

As each student progresses, TutorIT probes to find out what has already been learned, and what remains to be learned. It delivers precisely the information the student needs to progress when and as needed. When learning a complex skill, needy students start with individual operations and decisions required to get the correct answer.

After mastering a skill, students may be required to perform complex combinations of steps and decisions in one’s head. This represents a higher level of expertise. Automation also may be required when and wherever authors believe this to be important.

Authors are not restricted like most tutorials on the market to selecting a, b, c, d or to fill in the blanks. TutorIT items may require multiple correct answers, multiple choices, fill in the blanks, clicks on the screen, or moving objects. Authors may even require students to automate multiple steps. After learning a skill, the student may be required to perform combinations of steps in his head.

Performing multiple steps simultaneously represents a higher level of expertise. Automation may be required wherever authors believe this to be important. Completing a TutorIT tutorial ensures that the student has achieved the level of mastery required by the author – whatever level an author feels best meets desired needs.

A broad variety of TutorIT tutorials have already been created. They currently include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division facts, whole number algorithms, fractions, decimals, signed numbers, expressions, logical thinking, critical reading, basic math abilities, algebra 1 and algebra 2, word problems and basic statistics, along with a broad variety of samples.

Of special note is a set of tutorials for the SAT. Each SAT can be taken in either of two modes – Diagnostic or Adaptive. In Diagnostic Mode the student takes an SAT under actual (timed) conditions with scores at the end. In Adaptive mode, students get immediate feedback on each test item. TutorIT tells the student why and answer is correct or incorrect. Test items that are answered correctly drop out automatically until the student demonstrates mastery of each item.

SAT scores generally increase the more tests a dedicated student completes. Students can continue the process with new SAT exams as many times as desired, or until one reaches a desired level of proficiency.

P.S. Authoring and TutorIT are based on years for fundamental research beginning long before the inventor Dr. Joseph M. Scandura retired as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Since retirement he has devoted his efforts both to creating the most powerful authoring platforms available and to creating a broad sampling of TutorIT tutorials. To learn more about the unique theory and patented technologies on which TutorIT is based, please click the “FOR PROFESSIONALS” LINK. There you can learn about Prof. Scandura’s long research history, including 8 books and over 220 scientific publications proving the foundations of published basic and applied research articles that have made TutorIT tutorials possible along with the authoring systems used to create them. You also can learn how to use these
